About The ABLE Project
The ABLE Partnership Ltd is a not for profit company. It supports social inclusion by providing guidance, training and employment opportunities to disadvantaged young people and offenders through its core activities of sustainable local food production and regenerating a former landfill site.
The ABLE project combines outdoor learning with local food production.
ABLE's goals include:
- Adding composted sludges from the adjacent sewage treatment works for the next 8-10 years to the site. This saves Yorkshire Water the disposal costs of 8,000 tonnes of sludges a year.
- Use willow and hazel coppice as a renewable energy source to help generate warm water for 5 large fish tanks.
- Sustainable fish production, including Carp, Sturgeon, Catfish and Tilapia.
- Production of an educational wildlife trail
- Reduction of CO2 emissions through planting of a woodland and willow coppice.
- A significant increase in biodiversity at the site.
- The generation of income from the sale of fish to local communities.
- Establish a tree nursery and produce both trees and plants for sale.
- Provide young people access to training opportunities.
