Rugby Stars Open ABLE Project Greenhouses
Added: Aug 4, 11:29 AMWakefield Wildcats star player Jason Demetriou and head coach John Kear visited the ABLE project in Wakefield in June to open three new greenhouses, funded by the rugby charity, Wooden Spoon. The event was attended by directors of Wooden Spoon, staff at The ABLE Project and representatives from Wakefield District Community School.

The ABLE project is a working partnership for the ecological and economic regeneration of a 34-acre former landfill site at Caldervale, Wakefield. At the heart of the scheme is a unique social enterprise producing fish and horticultural produce, using a system called Aquaponics, which channels nutrient rich fish waste to hydroponic grow beds, fertilising water intensive plants and re-circulating water to the fish tanks.
The ABLE project is also an outdoor resource for both schools and the probation service. It provides training on horticulture, aquaculture and environmental and land-based skills to young people whose additional needs are not met by the mainstream education system, as well as offering them a chance to develop other practical and social skills.
The Wooden Spoon Greenhouses will house aquaponic systems. One of the systems has been designed by Aquaponics UK who are developing new aquaponic techniques in rearing fish and producing vegetable crops. The other two greenhouses will house the mixed use aquaponic system that The ABLE Project has established over the last few years.
